Are the Ten Commandments merely a restrictive list of rules, or are they a divine invitation to deep friendship with God and neighbor? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Anna Mitchell welcomes back Fr. John Gavin, S.J.—author of Mysteries of the Lord's Prayer and Growing into God—to continue exploring the Church Fathers cited in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Focusing on CCC 2063 and a passage from St. Irenaeus of Lyon’s Against Heresies, Fr. Gavin unpacks how the Decalogue serves as moral formation for friendship. He explains how God addresses each human soul individually ("you"), inviting us into His divine life. Fr. Gavin also addresses why St. Irenaeus defended the abiding validity of the Ten Commandments against ancient Gnostic heresies, and clarifies the essential distinction between the universal, natural law of the Decalogue and the ceremonial or dietary laws of the Old Covenant.
