Like many of us, Katherine Bennell-Pegg grew up with a dream of one day becoming an astronaut.
But unlike most childhood dreamers, Katherine actually achieved hers. In 2024, she became the first astronaut to officially represent Australia and the first Australian woman to receive professional astronaut wings. On January 25 this year, she was named the 2026 Australian of the Year for her trailblazing contribution to the Australian space industry.
In this episode of the Stellar podcast, Katherine opens up about the decades of sacrifice it took to get here, what she really thinks about the criticism of her Australian of the Year win, and why she believes you don't need to leave Earth to change the world.
