Modern medicine is extraordinarily good at diagnosing and treating disease. But is treating disease the same thing as healing?

In this episode, Dr Shami speaks with Professor Paul Dieppe, physician, researcher and author of Healing and Medicine: A Doctor’s Journey Toward Their Integration.

After a distinguished career in academic medicine and rheumatology, Paul's curiosity increasingly turned towards something conventional medicine often struggles to define: healing.

Their conversation explores the idea that healing may involve much more than the treatment itself. The relationship between doctor and patient, feeling heard and understood, expectation, belief, meaning, intention and the context in which treatment is delivered may all influence the experience and potentially the outcome of healthcare.

They explore the fascinating science of placebo and nocebo and ask whether we have underestimated the biological power of the therapeutic relationship.
