The Blues Music Awards brings together Blues performers, industry representatives, and fans from all over the world to celebrate the best in Blues recordings and performances from the previous year. The BMAs are generally recognized as the highest honor given to blues musicians and are awarded by vote of Blues Foundation members. The Renasant Convention Center was packed with blues musicians, fans, and music-world luminaries on May 9th, anxious to see who would be the winners at the 45th Annual Blues Music Awards. Legendary blues guitarist Luther Tucker celebrated a birthday this week and Shaun’s celebrating by featuring his Antones records release Sad Hours. Plus with the announcement of the Blues Foundations Hall of Fame class of 2024, he’s featuring tracks by a selection of the artists that will be inducted in May. Including Lurrie Bell, Jimmy Rushing, OV Wright, Odetta and Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials.

Recorded raw with a band pulled from the ranks of Austin's legendary Antone's Nightclub, this session finds an older, laid-back Lester revisiting his classic Excello sides and distilling them to their essence.” With the re-release of this wonderful record a cpl of weeks ago, Shauns put together another Blues With A Feeling classic album feature. Plus new releases from Bobby Rush, Christone Ingram, Monster Mike Welch and Betty LaVette.

Greg “Fingers” Taylor passed away on November 23, 2023 at the age of 71.  Greg “Fingers” Taylor was an American harmonica and blues artist best known for his work with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. In addition to appearing on tour for over 30 plus years and on the majority of Buffett’s albums. Fingers also recorded with James Taylor, Chris LeDoux, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mac McAnally, Little Milton, Al Kooper, Jimmy Hall, Tim Krekel, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Michael Nesmith, Bo Diddley, Larry Raspberry, Debbie Davies, Don Nix and The Tams. Fingers was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2011. With the sad passing of Greg Taylor last month, Shaun’s playing selected tracks from his five solo albums, plus excerpts from a Paul Leslie interview backstage with Fingers in 2006.

Rosco Gordon  was an American blues singer, pianist, and songwriter. He is best known for his hit songs "Booted," "No More Doggin', and "Just a Little Bit". Gordon was a pioneer of the Memphis blues style.  He played piano in a style known as the "Rosco rhythm," with the emphasis on the off-beat.  This rhythm was an influence on later musical styles such as Jamaican ska and reggae. (Wikipedia) Don’t miss this wonderful show as Shaun features the great Rosco Gordons classic Duke Robillard produced Stony Plain records release Memphis Tennessee, with an added bonus as broadcaster and label boss Holger Peterson chats with Rosco about his incredible life in the blues. His playing has influenced the course of rock and roll and had an impact on many of modern rock's current guitar heroes, including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and especially Stevie Ray Vaughan. His early music bridged the gap between '50s rockabilly and the psychedelic blues-rock of the following decade, and, like the best rock and roll, his work continues to embody a mixture of white and black roots music. Rock, blues, soul and country -- Lonnie brings them all together for a sound that has been all his own for nearly thirty years.” It was the great mans birthday a week ago and so to celebrate, Shauns pulled together a collection of classics from his amazing career. Kicking off with the golden days of the early 1960s. All the way through to his late career resurgence of the late 80’s when, with the support of long time fan Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lonnie Macks career had another amazing boost. The best of his years at Alligator records, some cracking live performances and those two groundbreaking guitar instrumentals that saw Lonnie crack the pop charts in 1963.

Seventy years before the late Bob Koester founded Delmar (later Delmark) Records while a college student in St. Louis, Buffalo Bill’s travelling Wild West Show debuted, Chester A. Arthur was president, Thomas Edison brought electric light to Roselle, NJ for the first time, and “Black Bart” was in the news for another stagecoach robbery. When Koester released his first record in 1953, many of the now-iconic figures in blues and jazz were still every day working musicians… Delmark is the oldest independent jazz and blues record label in the world, boasting a catalog bulging with over twelve thousand recordings by a virtual who’s who of jazz and blues. Although Koester retired in 2018, under the leadership of President/CEO, Julia A. Miller, and Artistic Director Elbio Barilari, Delmark has released over 30 thirty albums in five years, has made digitally available over twelve thousand songs and continues its mission of seeking out and documenting new talent. Besides awarding honors in 25 categories, the BMAs, as is its tradition, featured performances from many nominees, with the gala ending in a jubilant all-star jam.” With all the winners announced on the weekend, Shaun’s diving into the BWAF library to feature songs by many of this year’s worthy winners. “Everything about Albert King was big.  He stood six feet four inches tall and weighed more than two hundred and fifty pounds. One fan who met the great blues guitarist and vocalist later recalled that “his hand was literally twice the size of mine.”  He played a big guitar, a triangular Gibson Flying V shaped like a rocket ship. He named it “Lucy” and played upside-down and left-handed without reversing the order of the strings.
