Oil price volatility in Canada puts you in a strange position every time you fill up. You pay more at the pump and somewhere in the federal math, the country collects more too. High oil means bigger equalization payments flowing across provinces. That does not make the receipt feel better.

 

What does it mean when $120 a barrel corrects back down below $100 and the question is whether the statement caused it or the market did? The variables are global, but the reason the decisions get made or reversed tends to come back to one thing: how much it costs to fill a tank and whether people will remember it when they vote.

 

A dollar ninety for diesel is not relief. It is the new reference point.

Social media doom scrolling used to mean wasting time. Now it means being marketed at by people you never followed, on behalf of products you never asked about, in a feed that looks nothing like what you signed up for. You did not change. The platform did.

 

Reddit was supposed to be the weird corner of the internet for people who never see the sun. Somewhere that changed. The upvote and downvote system still works. The communities still moderate. A turquoise Magic card sleeve ad does not appear in your feed because you said something near your phone. You go there and you find what you went looking for.

 

That is a low bar. It should not feel like a revelation. But here we are, looking at a forum website from the early internet as the place people are starting to trust again for honest answers.

The doomsday clock hitting 85 seconds to midnight is the kind of fact that lands hard and then disappears into the noise. You file it somewhere between knowing you should care and not knowing what you'd do about it anyway. That gap, it turns out, is the most important variable in the whole equation.

Picture the same tool that mapped every human protein, a Nobel Prize-winning breakthrough built to prevent disease, being used by someone who asked it the wrong question. The safeguards exist. They also have a workaround that takes about as much effort as convincing a chatbot you're an adult. Meanwhile, the early warning systems feeding nuclear decisions are already running on AI, and the officials those systems report to haven't been told. The distance between safe and not safe is shorter than the reassurances suggest.

Governing this technology is still not happening at the scale it needs to. The clock has moved in both directions before, and both times it was because of what ordinary people decided to do with their attention. That window is still open, but it has never been this narrow.
