Wait What? Twitter then Vine Then Twitter Then X?

Twitter history might eventually be remembered as much through old screen layouts as old posts. Ed Conroy offers an unexpected way to recognise tomorrow’s nostalgia: look at the digital details that change almost unnoticed today.

Television commercials supply familiar throwbacks now. But what takes their place for generations growing up inside apps? That question gives a return to 2006 a different edge, especially alongside Vine’s challenge to tell a complete story in just six seconds. What made that constraint so productive?

Twitter itself carries a less comfortable contradiction. Ed joined early to circulate his writing, became hooked on the news feed, and says he still is. His defence of its importance sits beside a blunt assessment of its politics and twenty years of doomscrolling.
