What makes a good coach? You have had one. You know the feeling of someone putting you in a situation where they believed in you before you believed in yourself. The question is whether you can recognize what they actually did, because it probably wasn't what you think.

Before a game on a losing road trip, Willie Desjardin went around to every player in that room and handed each one a genuine compliment. Then he asked the team what they thought they needed to do to fix the power play. He didn't come in with the answer. He came in with the question, and it turned out the question was the whole point. Adam Redmond walked away from coaching into medical sales and found the same skill running the same play.

Coaching intangibles transfer. The number of athletes who make a living wage playing their sport is so small it barely registers, which means every good coach is actually teaching something else entirely. The question Willie asked on that road trip is still working. Carter is 21 and Adam is still the answer.

What does it feel like to watch something executed flawlessly with no visible plan for what comes next? Iran's military has been dismantled in days. The US has promised escort convoys through the Strait of Hormuz. Matt Gurney has a pretty good read on US fleet disposition right now and says plainly: they do not have the ships. Within a week of the first bombs falling, two Toronto synagogues were hit by gunfire. The war is not just over there. It never is.
