Attending the Olympics has been on your list for years and you keep talking yourself out of it. Too far, too expensive, too hard to build a trip around real life. You don't need two weeks or a perfectly mapped itinerary. You need one focused week and a clear idea of what you actually want to see. The halfpipe looks like a video game until someone is flying ten feet above your head.

 

The Finland game was the one. Canada went down 1-0, gave up a shorthanded goal on the power play, and the Finnish fans, outnumbered four to one, were somehow louder than everyone else in that building. McKinnon scored and the atmosphere turned over completely. Cellebrini possible offside? Jaime's only thought during that two-minute wait: he's 19 years old, and if they call it back, the whole country blames him.

 

What the broadcast never shows is what happens after the horn. Jaime had beers with the Finnish fans when it was done and says they were a hoot. He found out Canada lost the gold medal game from a stranger who walked out of an airplane bathroom and announced it to the entire cabin. He'd do it again without a second thought.

Lesley sits on her local hockey board specifically to keep barriers low and still describes rep seasons climbing into the tens of thousands between spring hockey, hotel rooms, and $400 sticks. Jimmy was at the Four Nations game in Montreal when three fights broke out in the first nine seconds and calls it the most electric sporting event he's ever attended. That same window, Canada's Olympic roster carried no Quebec players, and he ties both facts to the same root: not enough investment in development infrastructure.

A TFSA you opened because someone told you to. Maybe an RESP. You've been meaning to figure it all out and you haven't, and that's not unusual. It's just expensive.

Jessica Moorhouse talked to a woman in her investing course who specifically requested ETFs from her bank. The advisor nodded, made the trade, sent the paperwork. Moorhouse looked at the statements months later: the advisor wasn't licensed for ETFs. What the woman actually owned was a mutual fund wrapped around ETFs, a different product entirely. She had no idea. That gap between what you asked for and what you actually got is more common than the industry would like you to think.

There may also be money in a forgotten account somewhere with your actual name on it. Federally and provincially, there are tools to find it. Before the season changes, it's worth one afternoon to find out.
