Disinformation doesn’t become credible because the threat behind it is genuine. Dr. Lee Kuhnle tackles the difficult middle ground between ignoring foreign interference and letting the accusation explain every political outcome someone dislikes.

The anger was already there. The divisions weren’t invented yesterday. If outsiders amplify those tensions, how much of the result belongs to their efforts? It’s a harder question than identifying a suspicious account, especially when money, political interests and real grievances overlap.

And expertise offers no comfortable exemption. Lee describes a story that seemed to confirm his own work so neatly that he carried it straight into the classroom. What finally made him reconsider matters well beyond one mistaken claim: it tests whether being right is more important than finding out.

Topics: disinformation, foreign interference, political divisions, confirmation bias, election confidence
