Calgary closures bring back an odd endorsement: terrible elevators, a clunky layout, and a department store Ryan still calls his favourite. Revisit what made the old Bay special beyond anything a newer store could put on sale.

Lloyd’s roller rink leaves a different question behind. When a place closes after decades, does its story end with the building? The circumstances of its farewell and Calgary’s continuing appetite for roller skating give this memory an unexpected second chapter.

Then there’s a concert venue remembered fondly despite being a dump, and a hot dog spot whose replacement isn’t quite the same. Distortion, Tubby Dog, and Casablanca Video add to a question that runs deeper than shopping: which parts of a beloved business can actually be replaced?
