Shiftheads - Little House: The Show Got the Story Right. It Got the Prairie Wrong

View descriptionShare

Little House on the Prairie true story details rarely match what actually happened to the Ingalls family, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum's Julien Nolan lays out exactly where the two split. Some of the biggest moments on screen, it turns out, never happened in Walnut Grove at all.

The real family did live in a dugout carved into the bank of Plum Creek, and that part of the story checks out. What doesn't: the hills, the forests, the lumber yard, none of which exist on the actual flat, nearly treeless prairie the Ingalls family settled.

That gap shows up most with visitors. History-minded guests want accuracy, while show fans sometimes arrive expecting mountains that were never there. Both are chasing the same real story though, a family whose constant westward moves became one of the most enduring in American history.
