Buffalo Sabres playoffs are back, and they came prepared. The last time Buffalo made the postseason, Stephen Harper was Prime Minister, Minecraft had just launched, and homes cost $365,000. Fourteen years is a long time to wait. It is also apparently a long time to keep a list.

 

What does it feel like to watch a team pull out a burn book inspired by Mean Girls and start publicly calling out every fan who talked trash during the drought? The Sabres have been doing exactly that on social media, surfacing old tweets from people now jumping on the bandwagon. One guy posted support seven hours ago. They replied with his tweet from January 2024 telling them to jump in a pit.

 

You can feel something in an arena when a city has been waiting that long. Buffalo sounds like it. And the playoffs have not even started yet.

Somewhere between 1901 and today, a country became a mountain fortress that nobody could unlock, and the math of who profits has never really changed.

 

The military answer doesn't exist. The geography guaranteed that before the current conflict started. And the strait everyone wants opened is, and always has been, the answer to a question nobody in power has been willing to ask.

It tracks YouTube and search history. It found a licence plate number in someone's camera roll and used it to answer a question about tires. It is off by default. That was a deliberate choice and it is worth understanding why.

 

There is a completely different kind of tech story also in this episode. On the far side of the moon, out of contact with Earth, Jeremy Hansen shared maple cream cookies with his crew. He had submitted that request to NASA a year before launch. There is something specific about a Canadian astronaut choosing that moment, in that location, to pass around something with a maple leaf on it.

Wrongful conviction in Canada is still new information to most people who hear it, even after documentaries, headlines, and high-profile cases. Kelly Lauzon has been teaching it for over a decade and says it never stops being the first time someone in the room has really heard it.

There is a specific kind of fear that follows someone home after wrongful imprisonment. Not just trust issues or the strangeness of a world that kept moving without them. For some, it is the knowledge that they went in once for something they did not do, and nothing guarantees it could not happen again.

Ron Dalton lost 10 years, a wife he never got to grieve, and his children's childhoods. He came out still feeling sorry for the doctor whose mistake started it. That is either the most human response imaginable or the most disorienting. Possibly both.
