An Alberta pipeline announcement puts the “Ottawa doesn’t care” argument under pressure. Rob Breakenridge helps you gauge whether this moment could change the minds of Albertans frustrated with Canada, or whether optimism still has too much to prove.

Smiles at an announcement don’t get a project built. Indigenous participation matters beyond the photo opportunity, and past attempts to take shortcuts offer a warning. What would getting this right actually involve, especially when support won’t be unanimous?

If you’ve heard promises before, a different tone might not be enough. Access to the West Coast gives the unity question a practical dimension: what can provinces accomplish together? The distance between welcoming an announcement and trusting it to deliver is where this conversation gets interesting.
