U.S. midterms could change who controls Congress, but what would that change for Canada? Matthew Lebo, professor of political science at Western University, helps you assess where election results could create pressure on tariffs, presidential power and the Iran conflict.

A president can face an opposing Congress and still have room to act. If you’re hoping for movement on trade, which powers could lawmakers use? Matthew identifies potential leverage beyond simply passing a bill the president might veto.

Then there’s the question of what a losing result teaches the politicians who remain. Could their own reelection concerns change their willingness to push back? Matthew considers that possibility, while leaving a clear distinction between an election setback and the end of a presidency.
