1987 vs today gets wonderfully awkward when every explanation requires another explanation. Shane turns an imaginary Thanksgiving road trip into a way to rediscover how extraordinary ordinary technology has become. How do you explain a map on a phone to someone still picturing a curly cord?

Getting the family together means packing, calling ahead and taking pictures. But each familiar task sends this time traveler into another puzzle. Where does the film go? How does the photograph reach everyone? Even the simplest answer needs a translation.

Then dinner stretches beyond the people sitting at the table, and watching television becomes something entirely different. Follow the increasingly unlikely explanations and see which everyday convenience would have been hardest to believe. How much of the future is already sitting in a pocket?
