A $100,000 hockey shot gave Rod Black a moment he ranks among the most remarkable he has witnessed in sports. His firsthand account puts the distance, disbelief and celebration into perspective. What could surprise a broadcaster who has called championship moments on some of the biggest stages?

Wayne Robbins stood seventy-five feet from a target barely wider than the ball. Rod expected to do some friendly trash talking. Instead, he found himself watching a slow, curling attempt that seemed to take its time deciding the outcome.

The reaction brought Wayne and Rod together at center ice, with celebrities joining the celebration. But Rod says the shot might only have been the day’s second-biggest moment. An interview on the pavement put the prize money, and its purpose, back in focus.
