Federal by-election Monday has three ridings up and Terrebonne is the one nobody is calling easy. Supporting Liberals there has historically been like wearing a Leafs jersey at the Bell Centre. Andrew Caddell is on the ground in Montreal at the Liberal policy convention and says the ground is telling him 10 to 1000 votes. He is calling 500 for the Liberals.
Picture being in that room when Justin Trudeau's video plays. Three minutes. Ten years as leader. Prime minister. The applause when it ended was described as deathly by the people who were there. Wayne Easter told Andrew Caddell directly that without removing Trudeau the party would probably not have party status today. Four thousand five hundred people filled the convention centre, half of them for the first time in their lives. The man at the centre of all of it wears blue suits and blue ties and is being quietly described as a progressive conservative. That is the party asking for a majority government on Monday.
The Blanchet and Plamondon have staked their careers on Terrebonne. They have been there almost every day. Monday is not a formality for everyone.
