Cosplay might seem unfamiliar, but how much of your own wardrobe is about fitting in? Dawn McKechnie, director of cosplay events at Anime North, gives you a different way to recognize the person inside a costume, including your own.

You wear a favourite player’s jersey and another fan starts talking. Put on a character’s costume, and a similar connection becomes possible. But there’s another appeal that sounds contradictory: how can hiding your face help you step outside your comfort zone?

And what would make you spend months building something to wear? Dawn has a costume story that puts that commitment into perspective. Before deciding what makes a costume good, consider what the person wearing it hopes you’ll feel.
