Smart home technology isn't the only gadget worth questioning. Kris Abel helps separate electronic intelligence from mechanical ingenuity through a $15,000 singing bird, a disputed sale and a machine that can carry away an entire car.

Would a family screen earn its place on the kitchen counter? Apple's Home View pitch puts several people's personal accounts into one household device. The interesting test is how it knows whose information to display, and whether that convenience adds enough beyond the phone already in your pocket.
