Great Lakes ghost stories begin where the familiar shoreline stops feeling quite so familiar. Mark Leslie offers a tour of legends, unsettling history and tales told as true, with one publishing rule that changed which haunts could make his book.

A lighthouse keeper who never leaves is a classic ghost-story premise. Toronto's lighthouse tale adds a murder and an unexpected connection to beer. Elsewhere, the city's waterfront becomes a different kind of ghost: a reminder that the ground beneath your feet wasn't always ground.

You don't have to believe in spirits to enjoy following a story into the unknown. Mark's own enthusiasm comes with a complication: he's still afraid of the dark. Hear which late-night research session became too much even for the writer, and why he hopes that feeling reaches the page.

Topics: Great Lakes ghost stories, haunted lighthouses, Toronto waterfront, Canadian folklore, fear of the dark
