Kate Hall: Simple ways to reduce your winter power bill

View descriptionShare

Kiwis are being saddled with hefty power bills as prices continue to rise.

So what can you do to try reduce the cost you're paying this winter? Kate Hall has a few tips:

  • Heat people before spaces: wear wool layers, slippers, and use blankets before turning the heater up.
  • Stop heat escaping by closing curtains before sunset, blocking draughts around doors and windows, and only heating the rooms you're using.
  • Wash clothes in cold water where possible (not advised if you are doing reusable nappies) and wait until you have full loads before using the washing machine or dishwasher.
  • Air-dry washing whenever practical or make the most of sunny winter days before using the dryer.
  • Think long-term too: efficient appliances, heat pumps, and hot water systems often reduce both household bills and emissions over time.
