In February this year, there was report about 51 learners who were involved in a horrific accident after their scholar transport driver lost control of the bus in Welverdiend near Lichtenburg.

It is alleged that the driver jumped out of the moving bus after the steering wheel popped out, leaving the bus loaded with children to hit bushes before coming to a stop.



The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management said its contract with the operator had been terminated as preliminary investigation revealed that the operator had rented a different bus to be tested on the day of the vehicle verification process.



Though we did not have an interview on this topic, we mentioned it in one of our talkers… A resident of the North West, Khandisa, called in and highlighted the plight of learners in the province…

Commuters in several parts of the Eastern Cape were left stranded due to a strike by scholar transport operators. The operators under the scholar transport program suspended their services and blockaded several roads, claiming that they had not received their monies since January.

The operators have been transporting learners since the start of the 2024 academic year.

The scholar transport operators say they have been struggling to make ends meet due to non-payment by the transport department.

Some say their taxis have been repossessed as they are unable to afford monthly instalments. The taxi operators took their anger and frustrations to the street and closed major roads.

Commuters were left stranded and spent hours waiting for the roads to re-open.
