The explosion under Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD late yesterday claimed the life of one person. The cause of the explosion, which caused minibus taxis and other vehicles to overturn, remains a mystery. Some eyewitnesses recalled smelling gas after the explosion, but EgoliGas says its network has experienced no pressure loss and that customers in the area continue to receive an uninterrupted gas supply. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says 48 people were injured, 12 still remain in hospital, 34 vehicles are damaged and the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Lesufi was addressing the media following a meeting with various stakeholders at the joint Command Centre that has been set up at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.
