Members of the South African National Defence Force have been deployed across parts of the Western Cape from today. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the move during the State of the Nation Address in February. Troops have already been deployed in parts of Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State to patrol crime ridden areas and hotspots. Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has welcomed the deployment, saying it aims to strengthen safety and stabilize communities, especially in the Cape Flats.
