Commissioners pressed Mkhwanazi on why he rushed to the scene without confirming who was running the operation or whether it was officially sanctioned. Mkhwanazi admitted he acted on information from an informant, saying it was common practice to respond at any hour even without full details. He told the commission he had hoped the EMPD could take over the operation and claim the recovery. However, he conceded that in this case, that never happened, and the operation was not recorded through official police channels.
