Legal Sector Codes Summit takes place in Sandton

Twenty Home Affairs officials have been dismissed and sixteen others suspended. This following allegations of serious maladministration by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The investigation, which began in April 2024, focused on recurring schemes involving document fraud, visa and work permit manipulation and facilitation networks enabling unauthorized peoples entry into South Africa. This prompted the SIU to secure a Special Tribunal order to search five Refugee Reception Offices. With the assistance of the Hawks, investigators seized laptops, desktops, cell phones, external drives and suspicious files. Home Affairs minister, Dr Leon Schriber and SIU head, Leaonard Lekgetho briefed the media in Pretoria. The National Health Department has warned of a rising rate of mortality from Non-Communicable Diseases with significant increases in deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. According to Stats South Africa, NCD's account for 57.8 percent of all deaths, with 60 percent occuring prematurely before the age of 70 years. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Caroline Mongale, Chief Director at the health department responsible for Non-Communicable Diseases, Mental Health, Organization Transplants and Renal Dialysis

The Democratic Alliance's Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has officially announced his bid to become the next federal leader of the DA. He launched his campaign in Elsie's River, pledging to renew and strengthen the party ahead of the April federal congress. Meanwhile, Gauteng DA leader Solly Msimanga has thrown his hat in the ring for the federal chairperson position. The DA opened its nomination process for its congress yesterday. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the party's Federal Council, Hellen Zille, announced this week that she will step down as chairperson of the Federal Council. The decision comes as the DA won a by-election in Johannesburg's Ward 102, clearing the way for its mayoral candidate, Zille, to join the metro's council.
