A multi-agency operation targeting foreign-owned businesses has been disrupted across parts of Kimberley today. Members of the South African Police Service, Home Affairs Immigration officials, and the Sol Plaatje Municipality ealier today conducted raids aimed at identifying undocumented foreign nationals and ensuring compliance with municipal by-laws. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Operation Fiela Chairperson Thabiso Louw.

Many undocumented migrants were arrested in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni. Several businesses, mostly spaza shops and supermarkets, have also been issued with notices for non-compliance. This follows a Spaza Shop Compliance blitz; some business owners have been found to be operating with expired licenses. The operation is in response to the ongoing impasse between South Africans and undocumented migrants in the country City of Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza was leading the operation. The United National Transport Union, UNTU has accused PRASA of bad faith and underhanded tactics in a retrenchment process affecting over 600 workers. UNTU says its repeated attempts to engage PRASA leadership were ignored, forcing the union to take urgent legal action in the Labour Court. The union also alleges PRASA held separate talks with a minority union, raising concerns over transparency and fairness. We spoke to UNTU Media Liaison and Communications Officer, Atenkosi Plaatjie
