Gauteng police have launched an investigation into the murder of Inkatha Freedom Party MP and Deputy Chief Whip, Khethamabala Petros Sithole, who was fatally attacked in Katlehong on Saturday. Parliament's Presiding Officers, including National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chair Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, have condemned the killing, describing Sithole as a unifying figure beyond his party affiliation. Environment Minister, Willie Aucamp has decided to push ahead and rule on appeals against environmental authorisations for key offshore oil and gas exploration projects. The decision comes against a backdrop of sharply rising global oil prices fueled by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
