The Bench Marks Foundation has expressed concern at the number of mining companies operating in South Africa, that continue to fail in providing housing for their employees and local communities as required by law. According to research recently conducted by the foundation, many mines are surrounded by informal settlements where mineworkers and host communities live, due to the failure by the mining companies to meet their legal obligation.
