Consumers can breathe a sigh of relief as prices ease to their lowest level in three years. This as data released by Statistics South Africa shows that the consumer price inflation has cooled down further from 4,6-percent in July to 4,4-percent in August 2024.  Stats SA notes the contributions to the decline came from transport, housing, restaurants and hotels.   The consumer price index has fallen below the Reserve bank's 4,5-percent midpoint target, strengthening the case for major interest rate cuts this year. Several municipalities have been allegedly defrauding workers by failing to pay over funds to different pension fund administrators - and according to the Treasury's adjudicator, the three-year debt prescription law makes it easier for the municipalities to stall and not have to dole a cent out to the workers. The two-pot system has exposed several municipalities and security companies for committing this transgression. This week, the Bloemfontein High Court ordered the Free State-based Mafube Municipality to pay more than R37.7 million of employees' pensions that were allegedly embezzled. Civic movement Save South Africa has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to "act seriously" against Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube after she snubbed the signing of the contentious Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill into law. Last week Friday a senior official of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Gwarube, announced that she would not attend the event at the Union Buildings where Ramaphosa signed the Bill. The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) Protested outside the Pietersburg English Medium Primary School in Polokwane today, where Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube was conducting a site visit. Cosas is calling for her dismissal after she chose not to attend last week Friday's signing of the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, says she will adhere to the role of her department in ensuring the successful implementation of the Basic Education Laws Amemdmend Bill. The bill was signed into law last week by President Cyril Ramaphosa, although some of its clauses have been suspended for now. Gwarube was on a site visit to four schools in Limpopo.
