South Africa is one of the countries experiencing a shortage of one type of diabetes treatment, called Glucagon-Like Peptide- Receptor Agonists or GLP1. That's according to the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology in Johannesburg. GLP1 is a class of medication used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The treatment is considered a valuable addition to diabetes management, promoting better blood sugar control. Experts say, the shortage is as a result of the drug being prescribed for weight loss.
