Over the past two years, dozens of people have been killed in a turf war between gangs in Westbury, on Gauteng's West Rand. The area, which borders Sophiatown and Newlands, has been ravaged by gang violence, high levels of unemployment, substance abuse and domestic violence. Residents recently took to the streets demanding government intervention. The thirteen and a half thousand residents, predominantly coloured, are squeezed into an area of just over one square kilometre. The socio-economic ills mean crime is a lucrative business.
