According to the fact-checking organsation, AfricaCheck, nearly fifty percent of Grade 9 pupils report being bullied at least once a month. The advent of technology and social networking sites means bullying behaviour has migrated into the digital sphere, where it is easier for perpetrators to hide behind anonymity, and more difficult to confront them about harmful behaviour. As Youth Month draws to an end, experts warn that while many parents think online bullying is less serious than real-world bullying, the effects can be just as detrimental, if not worse, for the children on the receiving end.
