Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira will make history when he runs out against the Lions at Ellis Park this Friday. The Sharks prop is set to become the most capped South African player in Super Rugby with his 157th appearance for the Durban side. Last year, the Zimbabwe-born forward, joined an exclusive club of only six players to earn 100 caps for the Springboks. The 33-year-old says he never dreamt of achieving so much in the game. Mtawarira made his debut for the Sharks in 2007 under Dick Muir. He quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading props and a year later became a Springbok. He recalls his maiden Super Rugby season which announced his arrival but ended in heartbreak for the Sharks. Mtawarira is honoured to break the record but wants to put his personal achievements aside at Ellis Park. After losing to the Bulls at home last weekend, the player understands the importance of bouncing back. The Sharks remain winless against South African opposition this year and the match against Swys De Bruin’s side is a big chance to end that record.
