This ranking is based on people’s self-reported life evaluations collected over three years (2023–2025) using the Cantril Ladder, where respondents rate their lives from 0 (worst) to 10 (best). South Africa’s life evaluation score was 5.009, with a confidence range of 95–104, meaning its true ranking likely falls within that bracket. Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Malawi are the top three unhappiest countries, while Finland, Iceland and Denmark have been declared as the happiest nations.
