LISTENNOW: Brett Young joins Audacy’s Rob + Holly for the Friday Night Takeover

Known to share the spotlight with Presley (3) and Rowan (2) every now and then, welcoming them on stage to dance to the songs they inspired and star in the music videos, Brett Young shared with Audacy’s Rob + Holly that he hopes those appearances are the extent of their music “careers.”

“If my daughters decide the they’re absolutely in love with music and it’s the only thing that could absolutely make them  happy, I will 100% support,” he told Audacy’s Rob + Holly. “But if they have ten things that they like and music is just one of them, I’m going to support the other nine.”

Clarifying he absolutely loves his career, Young offered some more context into the sacrifices he makes in order to maintain his spot on radio sharing it’s only worth it if music is the only thing that makes you happy.

“If you can be happy doing anything but music, do anything but music,” Brett said, admitting that was a piece of advice it took him a while to understand. “Do something that makes you happy, and only do music if you absolutely have to.”

He continued, “This lifestyle is difficult and then you add family into the mix and it gets more difficult. You’re gone all the time and you’re flipping schedules once a week, sometimes twice a week and it is a grind. That doesn't take away from the 90 minute or 60 minutes on this tour on stage… the adrenaline is incredible… that part is always incredible…. But the schedule is a grind. It takes a toll on you and your body and your family.”

While it hasn’t been easy, Brett seems to have found a balance and according to him, it has a lot to do with the support of his wife, Taylor. Much of Brett’s success comes from songs inspired by their love, and his current single “Dance With You,” is a perfect example.

“I hate to dance,” he said, before diving into the deeper meaning behind the song. “The reason I used dance is because it’s something that I dislike this much, but I’m willing [to do it for her]…. You choose somebody that you want to share every life experience  with  and I just used dancing as the example.”

Brett Young | Friday Night Takeover

Since first entering the Country music scene in 1976, scoring her first hit in 1983, and remaining one of the biggest names in Country music for 47 years, Reba McEntire knows what it’s like to work hard for music success.

While her great success is a product of her own hard work, determination and talent, she admits she had some sound advice from a number of the legends that came before her that served as her guiding light. “I usually say, ‘Be careful what you wish for and be specific,’ because this is a hard, hard way of life, but it’s very rewarding,” Reba told Audacy’s Rob + Holly when asked what advice she has for up and coming artists.

“If you surround yourself with great people — like RedSteagall told me to do — and treat it like a business — which ConwayTwitty and MelTillis told me to do, and TheStatlerBrothers — ‘Treat it like a business and it’ll take great care of you.’ If you ‘hoop it off’ — like Grandpap used to say — it’ll let ya. You gotta tend to business and show up, be on time, be prepared and have fun.”

McEntire is full of wisdom she’s gained from across her nearly 50-year career and is in the perfect position to pass it on to the next generation of artists as she is a coach on the current season of NBC’s TheVoice.

“That’s something I see a lot on 'The Voice' with these young kids,” she said of struggling to keep their heads up when things get tough. “They’re in their teens — and if they don’t do real well, they get so upset. It’s all we can do to say, ‘Listen, you’re just starting out. Keep working on it. Keep working on your craft. Sing everywhere you can and have fun with it… Have fun. Take a deep breath, move forward.’”

Reba McEntire | Friday Night Takeover

DollyParton’s Rockstar album is officially here and it packs a punch with nine original songs and 21 covers that feature legendary artists from across the decades.

While it’s no surprise that the beloved Country queen was able to secure some major A-list artists for the project, we’re all curious to know exactly how Dolly approached each artist with the ask. From Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to Elton John and Lizzo, there's no shortage of star power and according to Parton it all “just fell into place.”

“It all fell right into place. I had already recorded the album, I wasn’t planning to ask people to sing on it, I was just going to do it. And then I thought I might have a couple people join me and then all of a sudden I had all these great artists,” She told Holly of Rob + Holly during a special Holly + Dolly edition of the Friday Night Takeover.

“I didn’t want to ask them blatantly, where they could say no if they didn’t want to hurt my feelings and make them feel bad about having to say no. So, I just went through managers for a bigger part of them.”

One of the biggest shocks from the album for fans worldwide was Dolly’s ability to get The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr together for a collaboration of “Let It Be,” along with special guests PeterFrampton and MickFleetwood.

“I knew Paul from different things, so I just sent a message that [read], ‘I’ve done your song and I wondered if there’s be a possibility if you’d sing on it.’ I didn't ask him to play the piano,” she clarified. “Then he sent back and said, ‘I’d be happy to play the piano if you want me to and sing on it.’”

“Then after I put Paul on it, I thought, ‘Wow! I need to get Ringo to be on this because they’re the last of The Beatles. Everything just seemed to fall into place with all these great artists.”

In addition to getting The Beatles back together, Dolly also shed a big light on the impact females have had in the Rock space by featuring friends like Joan Jett, Melissa Etheridge, LindaRonstadt, PatBenatar and many more.

“I wanted to have some of the great girls. I wasn’t trying to make a statement of any kind,” she said of all the female features. “I just admire those girls so much… we just had so many great female artists on there.”

In addition to the great talent already on the project, Dolly shared there was one artist she wasn’t able to secure and that was Tina Turner.

“I wanted Tina. I had reached out to them for her to sing and she was already getting in to being too far gone with her illness to be able to sing it," she shared of Turner, who passed in May 2023. "But I would have really loved that. Would’t that have been cool?”

Dolly Parton | Friday Night Takeover

As CMA New Artist of the Year and recent GRAMMY nominee JellyRoll continues to rise in fame, the Tennessee native says he’s taking notes from one of the best of all-time – DollyParton.

“I think using the term, ‘icon,’ is the best way to describe Dolly Parton,” he told Audacy’s Rob + Holly. “I’ll never forget the first time I heard, ‘I’ll Always Love You,’ or, ‘Jolene,’ or these huge records.”

Aside from her impactful music over the years, Jelly says he studies interviews from across Parton’s career to help him prepare for the ever-growing amount of interviews he is asked to participate in as his popularity continues to grow.

“What Dolly don’t know, that I can’t wait to tell her one day, is the only media training I’ve ever done in my life was watching old Dolly Parton interviews,” he laughed. "Nobody knows how to carry [themselves] with grace, integrity, but also be assertive and not take bull, but keep a smile. She wrote the book on how to deal with media.”

One interview in particular has stood out to Jelly Roll, and that’s Parton’s 1977 conversation with BarbaraWalters. During the chat, Walters questioned Parton about her “over the top” appearance, while also asking Parton if she felt like a ”joke.” What would’ve caused many people to get defensive (rightfully so), cast a light on Dolly’s every-present grace and humble nature.

“[Barbara Walters] was pokin’ at her about how she dressed and carried herself and then Dolly finally looked at her with this big Dolly smile and said, ‘Honey, I don’t care what people think about me. I know what my family thinks about me, I know what my spirit it, I know who I am as a human, I know how I take care of people and how I approach this life,’” Jelly recalled.

“‘If somebody wants to judge me based on what color lipstick I’m wearin’ or how my hair is fixed up, that’s on them. That says a lot more about them than it does of me, but that stuff don’t make an opinion to me, sweetheart. You don’t have to keep asking me about it.’ I was like, ‘Way to go, Dolly!’”

While Jelly makes clear he is taking media notes from Parton’s interviews, he also admits he is taking a page out of her philanthropic examples too – something both artists have shown means a lot to them.

“Even outside of music, her philanthropy. Her going back to Sevierville [Tennessee] and buying her entire town. Then making her entire town a destination. Not just what she’s done for charities, but the fact that she turned Sevierville, Tennessee into a premiere destination for families to go to. She changed the economical structure of East Tennessee by herself. It’s crazy!”
