This episode kicks off with the federal government freezing $10 billion in social service funds—including child care and TANF grants—to five Democratic-led states (California, New York, Illinois, Minnesota, and Colorado) over alleged misuse and fraud. Officials cite systemic misuse and say the freeze ensures proper spending, while critics call it political retribution and warn it risks undermining supports for low-income families in these states.
