In John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany," the young man who grew up in New Hampshire in the 1950's dealt with issues many others could never understand. Yet his love for his best friend Johnny never flagged, and Owen spent his life trying to give something to Johnny never knew he needed. "Owen Meany" is a book written in 1989, but reveals thoughtful universal truths from beginning to end.

Dr. Phil Spinella was a guest on the Rick Dayton Show Thursday afternoon. He is a professor at the Pitt School of Medicine and is co-principal investigator of a new clinical trial that tackles the leading cause of death in children: traumatic bleeding.  The study is funded through a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services and has a budget of $34 million for the first five years. That budget could expand to $81 million over ten years.  Among the things they will study is whether whole blood is better than transfusions of individual blood parts like red cells, platelets and plasma.
