Interview with Theriso Tsambo

View descriptionShare
Mrs Theriso Tsambo is a Choral Music Composer, Conductor, Adjudicator and a Language Lecturer at North West University in South Africa.

Tsambo studied the theory of music with the Royal Schools of Music through the Northwest Arts, and was guided by Mr Ezekiel Mathibe. Her ability with music saw her scooping the first prize with her debut SATB composition ‘Ma-Afrika molato ke ‘ng?’ during the Northwest choral music composers’ competition held under the auspices of Northwest Arts in 1997. She only came into the limelight during 2000 when the same song was prescribed nationally for senior secondary schools. This led to the Northwest Schools Music Association (NOWESMA) and the South African Schools Music Organization (SASMO) both awarding her certificates in recognition of her efforts.
Her songs and themes of her music are:
• Ma-Afrika molato ke‘ng (Fellow Africans, what is the problem?). The song laments on child abuse and neglect.
• Halala Bahumagadi (We salute the women), praises women for their anti-pass laws march on 9 Aug 1956 at the Union Buildings in Pretoria led by Lillian Ngoyi, Bertha Gxowa etc.
• Thapelo ya AIDS (A prayer for AIDS), voices concern about the disease and the plight of the nation.

In the program repertoire included top artists from the African Continent like Fela Kuti from Nigeria, Angelique Kidjo from Benin, Youssou N’dou from Senegal, Oliver N’goma from Gabon, PJay from Zambia, Papa Wemba from DRC, Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe, Richard Siluma and Yvonne Chaka Chaka from South Africa.
