Ask sportscaster Gary Bender what were the first games he announced, and he might say they were during his countless hours driving a tractor on the family’s farm outside of Ulysses, Kansas.

He made up baseball games in Yankee Stadium, and football games in the Orange Bowl or maybe the Los Angeles Coliseum. He’d even sing the national anthem, and do the commercials.

Ultimately, those imaged games became reality, as he announced some of the most memorable competitions in sports history, from a young Michael Jordan’s game-winning shot as a freshman, to Roger Staubach’s Hail Mary pass when the Cowboys beat the Vikings, and the alley-oop “Shot Heard Around the World” when North Carolina State upset Houston at the buzzer.

Gary broadcast 29 different sports in his 40-year career, and during that time inspired countless people to reach for their dreams with class and determination.

Host Art Brooks has spent his career in broadcasting, both as on-air talent and in representing the industry as president and CEO of the Arizona Broadcasters Association for nearly 30 years. He was the driving force behind an Emmy-winning series of documentaries on drug abuse that combined a phone bank of 100 seasoned counselors and history-making "roadblock," as every TV station in Arizona and many radio stations broadcast the groundbreaking show on the same day at the same time. He also was instrumental in starting AZ AMBER Alert (one of two states in the nation where broadcasters initiated the program), helped form the Native American Broadcast Institute at Northern Arizona University and consulted with broadcasters in Bulgaria to help build commercial radio as the country was coming out of communism.

Eden Wild was born in Ethiopia, and lived in an orphanage until adopted by her American parents at age 3. She treasured memories of her siblings and friends in Africa, and as she grew older became intensely aware that some of the blessings she enjoyed in the U.S. weren’t available to them.

One of the greatest of these was clean water.

Eden wanted to make a difference. Now a junior in high school, she is already an experienced entrepreneur. At age 13, she and her family started a home-based business, Buna Tarik Roasters: Coffee with a story. Proceeds from coffee sales have already funded five wells serving thousands in Ethiopia. They also partner with a coffee farmer in Uganda who takes in pregnant single girls and supports them with counseling, and teaching trades, money management skills, and providing supplies.

Kim Covington by all measures had a satisfying and successful career, with 30 years in television news and a long list of awards for her reporting and community service. But a near fatal accident in the news van motivated her to make a momentous change of direction in her professional life.

The change was not due to her physical wounds, frightening as they were. In her words, “After I woke up from severe injuries and a traumatic concussion, I was never more awake to what God was calling me to do.”

That led her to step down from the broadcast industry to partner with the Arizona Community Foundation, where she now serves as Vice President, Community Initiatives. Kim works with diverse communities across the state, overseeing ACF projects including Latinos Unidos, the Black Philanthropy Initiative and several giving circles.
