Sally Young

The Curious Case of the Stolen Mace, a fascinating new book from award-winning historian Professor Sally Young. This is a cracking historical mystery that I thought might make a good fit for Remember When.

In 1891, the ceremonial mace of the Victorian Parliament, a powerful symbol of parliamentary authority, was stolen. Despite investigations by some of the colony's most skilled detectives, the mace was never recovered, and no one was ever charged.

Historian and award-winning author Sally Young pieces together old and new evidence 135 years later - including letters, witness statements and police reports - to reveal the thief and how he got away with the political crime of the century

A compelling historical page-turner, The Curious Case of the Stolen Mace retells the story of the political crime of the century, set against the backdrop of a Melbourne descending into political and economic turmoil caused by corruption and financial scandal on a much larger scale.
