New Testament era Christianity and revered Christian books were quite different from Christian beliefs today and the New Testament canon of scripture we have today.

For example, the Gospel of Thomas has authentic words of Jesus, not found in the New Testament.  The Gospel of Philip implies Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.  The Gospel of John (not the one in our Bibles today) talks about a Mother in Heaven (Heavenly Mother or Goddess married to Elohim). 

Books were taken out of the Christian canon of scripture, including the Shepherd of Hermas, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Didache, Sirach, 1 & 2 Maccabees, Tobit and others.

There were Many Changes to Christianity in the first Centuries.

We underestimate how much we can influence others for good by carefully choosing our words. Be positive, not negative. Be kind, not hurtful.  Praise, rather than criticize. All of these things are as Jesus did.  Using positive speech is one way we can be close to perfect and influence others for good.

Other faiths besides Mormonism have traditions of visions. In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner describes nine visions or apparitions of the Virgin Mary, acknowledged as genuine by the Catholic Church. Next, the visions of Emanuel Swedenborg are briefly described. Swedenborg, born in 1688, died in 1772, claimed to have visions of heaven and hell, and described them in ways similar to Joseph Smith.  Swedenborg said our purpose in this life was to be placed between heaven and hell where we would be enticed by both, thereby enabling us to freely choose either good or evil. This is similar to the LDS idea of "there must be opposition in all things" to accomplish our purpose in mortality.
