How precisely did Joseph Smith translate the Book of Mormon?  We do not know every detail, but in this first of a two-part series, Martin Tanner explains what we do know.  Translation could only have been accomplished with divine influence, as Joseph Smith at age 22-23 would not have been able to dictate, in virtually final form, a book about Ancient Jews, over 500 pages in length.
