2021-05-02 Religion Today - William Tyndale's Extrardinary Translation of the Bible into English

View descriptionShare

William Tyndale translated the Bible from the earliest known manuscripts in Hebrew and Greek.  His translation was so extraordinary, that when the 54 King James Bible translators completed their translation, it was 83% word-for-word Tyndale's New Testament translation and 76% Tyndale's Old Testament translation.  In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner describes Tyndale's marvelous story.  How he developed his linguistic abilities at Oxford and Cambridge, and how he translated the Bible into English, making it, for the first time, available to ordinary people.  For this, the Church condemned Tyndale as a heretic, strangled him, burned his body to ashes, then threw the ashes into the river.
