2019-09-22 Religion Today - Introduction to the Gospel of John

View descriptionShare

The Gospel of John is very different from the Synoptic Gospels.  It begins with a pre-existent "Word" the Greek meaning of which denotes deity Wisdom, knowledge, communication, and power.  The pre-existent Word is not God, but of the same genre as God.  In other words, God is deity and so is the Word, or Wisdom.  The Gospel of John is almost certainly the last written Gospel.  It associates Jesus with YHWH, by, among other things, quoting him as saying "I am that I am."  John is a very Greek and also a very Jewish Gospel.  It has several incidents not found in other Gospels, the wedding at Cana, Jesus interaction with the Samaritan woman at the well and the raising of Lazarus.
