2019-08-18 Religion Today - The Zelph Incident in LDS History

View descriptionShare

In June 1834 Zion's Camp members dug up an "Indian Mound" the significance of which has been debated ever since.  The Joseph Smith History, Vol. 2, p. 79-80 would lead a reader to believe Joseph Smith wrote in his diary the partial skeleton unearthed was of "Zelph" a white Lamanite who fought in the final battle between the Lamanites and Nephites.  However, the actual source is seven journals, many written years after the event, with conflicting information.  This event is used by some to show Book of Mormon events took place in North America.  Only those who look at the event superficially would come to such a conclusion.
