A full house gathered at the Sydney Writers’ Festival for Baraya Barray – Whale Song, a breathtaking evening of story, song, and poetry.  This panel discussion led by First Nations artists and cultural leaders uncovers how poetry can celebrate cultural ways of sharing story and encourages us to listen more deeply to the wisdom of Country.  Musician and composer Eric Avery sets the tone, opening with a violin performance inspired by the sounds of whales. Dhurga language holder, teacher and contemporary traditional dancer Elizabeth Luland, award-winning multi-disciplinary artist Kirli Saunders, alongside Eric Avery and host Luke Patterson share powerful stories of Country and kinship in this deeply moving and unforgettable panel, alive with cultural truth.  Held at the Sydney Writers’ Festival in 2025, this panel was part of Red Room Poetry’s ground-breaking program for First Nations school children and communities, Baraya Barray - Whale Song.  Baraya Barray - Whale Song celebrates the importance of First Nations languages and the natural environment. Through this program, young First Nations people connect with their community Elders, Language Custodians, scientists, poets and musicians to learn about and respond to the east coast Whale songline through the creation of poems, song and dance. What does poetry mean to you? And what if you could put a book on shuffle? Nam Le’s work encompasses fiction, non-fiction, poetry and screen. His debut poetry collection 36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem was published in March 2024 in Australia, the U.S. and U.K. Red Room Poetry Creative Producer and Line Break host Izzy Roberts-Orr spoke with Nam about breaking the form of the book apart, poetry’s ability as a form to reach through language toward the incommunicable, and his poem, ‘Quilting the Armour’ commissioned as part of 30in30 for Poetry Month in partnership with the NGA. ‘Quilting the Armour’ is an ekphrastic poem responding to Sidney Nolan’s 1947 painting of the same name, which depicts Maggie Skillion lining the inside of Ned Kelly’s helmet. What can poetry do to change the world? Earlier this year, we met up with poet and artist Jazz Money in a half-renovated room at Carriageworks during the Sydney Writers’ Festival. Scooched into the corner sitting cross-legged on the floor, Red Room Poetry Creative Producer Izzy Roberts-Orr spoke with Jazz about the radical potential of poetry, Sara M Saleh’s brilliant poem, ‘Border control: mediations’, and specificity as a gateway to the universal. Jazz Money is a Wiradjuri poet and artist whose practice is centred around poetics to produce works that encompass installation, performance, film and print. Their most recent poetry collection is mark the dawn, published by UQP and now available at all good bookstores. Sara M. Saleh is a human rights lawyer, organiser, writer, and the daughter of migrants from Palestine, Egypt, and Lebanon. She has been published and anthologised widely, and made history as the first poet to win both the Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize, and the Australian Book Review’s Peter Porter Poetry Prize. Her first full-length poetry collection, The Flirtation of Girls / Ghazal el-Banat is published by UQP, and her debut novel Songs for the Dead and the Living  is published by Affirm Press. Yirga is a writer, researcher and poet from Lalibela, Ethiopia. He currently lives in Whadjuk Noongar Boodja (Perth, Western Australia), where he is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Human Rights Education, Curtin University. His Amharic poetry was published in a solo collection, የተራሮች ጩኸት (The Cry of Mountains), and has been performed widely on stage and radio in Ethiopia. His English short stories and translated poems have been published in anthologies and journals, including Westerly, Unlimited Futures (Fremantle Press) and Ways of Being Here (Centre for Stories and Margaret River Press). Lulu Houdini is a proud Gamilaraay/Gomeroi woman, writer, artsworker, nurse and birth worker. She creates and explores around connections with poetry of land, sea, sky, story. POEM FOREST is a free nature writing prize that breathes life back into the natural world that sustains us. L-FRESH The LION is regarded as one of Australia’s most important hip hop artists. Here he is reading his poem, commissioned for Poetry Month 2023, 'Just another day on tour'. It's International Cat Day 🐈 We commissioned award-winning poet, author, and cat mum Shastra Deo to celebrate with this poem for #30in30 Shastra Deo was born in Fiji, raised in Melbourne, and lives in Brisbane. Her first book, The Agonist (UQP 2017), won the 2016 Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize and the 2018 ALS Gold Medal. Her second book, The Exclusion Zone (UQP 2023), is out now. Friday 4 August is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, and we’re sharing three poems commissioned for the Poetry in First Languages NAIDOC Learning Resource. ‘Ngapigan (Grandmother)’, by Aunty Anjilkurri Rhonda Radley, written and read in Gathang with interpretations by Aunty Rhonda. 'Ningimpi Nungampi Paywuta Manta', by Theresa Sainty, written and read in palawa kani with interpretations by Theresa Sainty. 'Our Responsibility', by Aunty Kerry Bulloojeeno Archibald Moran, intertwined with Anaiwan words Aunty Kerry has translated. Theresa Sainty is a Pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) woman, and an experienced and highly skilled consultant with a history in Government, program evaluation, curriculum development, and public speaking. Aunty Kerry Bulloojeeno Archibald Moran is a matriarch and medicine woman of Silver City Aboriginal Reserve – the Mission or Mish – on Anaiwan gooten country, Armidale.

Today marks the first day of Poetry Month, and it is an absolute honour to kick off with three never before published works by one of Australia’s greatest contemporary poets - the late Dorothy Porter, whose electric presence is still felt in the Australian poetry community today. Thank you to her partner Andrea Goldsmith for donating these poems 💜 The novelist, Andrea Goldsmith, met Dorothy Porter in 1992 on the Victorian Women's Writers’ Train. They were together until Dorothy’s death in December, 2008. Both writers were short-listed for the 2003 Miles Franklin award, Andrea for her fourth novel, The Prosperous Thief, and Dorothy for her verse novel, Wild Surmise.
