BLS says employers added 29,000 jobs in September, under the roughly 90,000 forecast, with unemployment ticking up to 4.2% from 4.1%. July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000. The press called it a miss. White House economic voices, including Kevin Hassett, called the inside numbers fine.

Private payrolls rose 46,000 while government shed 17,000. Manufacturing added 9,000, and factory employment is up about 72,000 since December 2025. Labor-force participation jumped 0.2 point to 61.8%. Navarro’s line today: the headline is a participation surge plus a shrinking public payroll, not a stall, and the Fed is still the problem.

CNBC’s Rick Santelli closes his full-time run today, on the jobs Friday he has owned for years. He stays on as a contributor. Bannon flags the farewell on the way into the Navarro hit.

Softer payrolls cooled near-term rate-hike bets. The Nasdaq pushed to a record as yields eased.

Is a 29,000 headline a warning, or proof the private sector is carrying the load while Washington shrinks?
