Before March 12, 2004, Marcus Wesson had made known his plans to relocate his daughters and their children to Washington, closer to extended family. On March 12, 2004, several members of Wesson's family, including two nieces who rebelled against him, converged on the family home, demanding Marcus release the children. Fresno police were called out to what was described as a custody dispute, and a standoff ensued. Wesson told the police to wait at the door, disappeared into the home, and when he returned to the door, his clothes were bloodied.
