Eversince I started Design Talk 2 years ago, I have been on a lookout to get at least one Industrial Designer guest (being one myself). I found our guest tonight by pure coincidence. I was listening to some music in youtube, where I normally skip the ads in between songs, but this time I watched through it. It was a Breville ad, promoting their latest coffee machine and one of the people came up in the ad was an Industrial Designer called Norman Oliveria. A bit of light research (fb ) confirmed he is of Filipino heritage, so I pmed him, fortunately, he replied and happily agreed to be interviewed. Small world as I later found out his sister, Nicole Oliveria (fashion designer), was a former Design Talk guest.

Norman Oliveria was born in Mabatang Bataan. In 1989, he and his family migrated to Australia when he was just 18 months old, he currently lives in North Parramatta. Norman came from a family who works with their hands - an Uncle is a machinist, cousins in woodworking, his Dad a welder, so he had the workshop available to create various things anytime he wishes. Norman was also creative growing up, he loved drawing airplanes, cars, building and objects. These talents and skills were fortunately obvious to his high school career adviser who suggested he take Product Design at TAFE. After 3 years of Product Design at TAFE Lidcombe, he took Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design at University of Technology Sydney (UTS). I think his experience is a best example, specially to those who will be taking their HSC next month, that there are other pathways to reach your dream course/career even if you don't achieve the right ATAR and HSC results.
